Women Are Actually Really Pumped To See Venom And Aquaman
While there are plenty of great movies being produced these days, arguably the largest and most profitable come from franchises like the MCU, DC Universe, or Harry Potter. And although comic book properties and nerd culture in general are often associated with male audiences, there are obviously plenty of ladies who enjoy superhero blockbusters as much as the rest of us. In fact, it turns out those blockbusters are exactly what female moviegoers are most excited to see in the coming months. Because a new poll indicates that upcoming movies Aquaman, Venom, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald are currently the three most highly anticipated movies for women.
This new information comes from a recent survey by Atom Tickets (via Variety), which polled 10,000 women who consider themselves frequent moviegoers. And out of all the upcoming flicks arriving in theaters in the coming months, two of the movies that female audiences are most excited for are comic book flicks. Furthermore, they're high-risk blockbusters that fans are eager to see and promptly judge. So while comic book marketing may focus more on male moviegoers, it's clear that women are just as invested in these big budget comic adaptations.
Overall, it seems that Venom and Aquaman are two projects that moviegoers are eager to find out more from. Not a ton of footage has been released from either project, and they each contain characters that haven't been properly adapted into live-action yet. Furthermore, both movies have an element of horror, which may add new colors to the already somewhat overstuffed genre.
Atom Tickets' poll about female moviegoers further highlights why shared universes like the MCU and DC Universe are attempting to be more inclusive, and have on screen representation. While much of the MCU has been focused on male characters, women are getting their day with Ant-Man and The Wasp and Captain Marvel. While DC has had its own critical success with Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman, it'l be interesting to see how Aquaman services its female characters Mera (Amber Heard) and Queen Atlanna (Nicole Kidman).
The interest in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is slightly less surprising, as J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World has always been one beloved by all, regardless of gender. Additionally, the Fantastic Beasts has generations of fans, as the kids who grew up during each new Harry Potter book's release are now adults who can pass it on to the next generation.
We'll just have to wait and see how each of these three blockbusters fare at the box office, as well as critically. The first of these projects to be released will be Venom on October 5, 2018, followed by Fantastic Beasts 2 on November 16, and Aquaman on December 21.
