Why Ronan The Accuser Didnt Appear Earlier In Captain Marvel, According To The Directors

As far as MCU villains go, Guardians of the Galaxys Ronan the Accuser was one of the more underwhelming of the franchise. When we learned that his younger self would appear in Captain Marvel, the universe had a chance to add depth to his character. However, now that weve seen his role in the movie, Lee Paces Kree baddie was just as forgettable as ever.

Ronan only showed up briefly in the third act of Captain Marvel to set off bombs for Carol Danvers to fight off before vowing hed be back, smirking and calling her the woman (ha good one!) before fleeing the area. Theres actually a pretty good reason why Ronan became an afterthought in the film. In the words of directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck:

Anna Boden: Here we have the Accuser ships that are the kind of bomb squad of the Kree. So weve already met Starforce which is like their SEAL Team Six and now we see the bomb squad thats going to be bombing a Skrull stronghold in the South. We played a lot with the question of when we introduce Ronan in this movie. Should we introduce him at the beginning of the film as the head Accuser of these Accuser ships or do we hold onto that reveal until later?Ryan Fleck: Yeah, I think it was more effective to hold on because it was giving it away too soon that the Kree were the bad guys because everyone associates them with Guardians of the Galaxy and it really just gave away too much too soon.

While the pair discuss the film on their Blu-ray commentary, they reveal that they decided to hold Ronans role until the end of Captain Marvel so it wouldnt give away that Kree equaled bad too soon. If fans of the MCU saw Ronan interacting with the Kree early on in the film, it would be too obvious of their side in the fight, especially since he is so clearly a villain in his 2014 debut appearance.

Ronan may not be part of the Kree collective in Guardians of the Galaxy, since he broke the Kree/Xandarian treaty in the movie, but his interactions with characters such as Jude Laws Yon-Rogg are clearly sinister. Yon-Rogg is introduced as Carols mentor and friend in the beginning of the film, and as an audience we learn with her the truths she didnt know. If we were one step ahead of the story the whole movie, it would not have been as compelling of an origin story.

The scenes where Captain Marvel fought off the shapeshifting Skrulls just would not have worked if we knew of their true intentions either. Watching the script flip on us midway through the movie just worked better, but unfortunately Ronans role had to be sacrificed in part as a result.

We do wonder what other encounters Captain Marvel and Ronan had between her movie and Guardians of the Galaxy. Did she have anything to do with his turn from the Kree military to work with Thanos on his quest to enact the Infinity War?

Glenn Close Further Explains Her Take On James Gunn And Twitter

Glenn Close was one of many Guardians of the Galaxy cast members who spoke out following Marvel's firing of James Gunn. At the time, she didn't really voice an opinion about whether or not Gunn should have been fired or whether she thought he should be allowed to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Instead, she focused on the ugly side of social media and the way many people use it to say things they would never say in person. Recently, the actress who played Nova Prime reiterated those comments, but also admits that the situation saddened her and that she felt bad for her former director. According to Close...

I felt sad. I felt sad certainly for James and I felt sad for the whole situation. I felt sad that we're in a society where on social media people say things that they might not say in person. I think that's a real danger. If you're saying something on social media that you can't say to somebody face to face, you should think about what you're saying on social media.

It's certainly true that whether or not people use social media for the anonymity it can provide, it certainly creates a distance between users that can make people comfortable saying things that they might be so comfortable with if they sitting across a table from somebody. Clearly, Glenn Close feels that if you wouldn't say something to somebody in person, you shouldn't say it online.

Having said that, she does admit to The Hollywood Reporter that the situation with James Gunn made her feel sad. While you can read her comments of Gunn as being quite critical of the things he said, they certainly count as comments he likely would not make in front of people, that doesn't mean she doesn't have sympathy for the situation or that she doesn't feel bad for the punishment he has received. Her overall opinion of the director still seems to be a positive one, as she complimented his work and the atmosphere he created on set when they worked together previously.

When I worked with him it was the first time I had been in a movie like that and he was a really good director and he had a great atmosphere on set.

While the fate of James Gunn and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, has been one of the most talked about and debated for the last month, it now at least seems like some final decisions have been made. There was reportedly a recent meeting between Gunn and Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn, about the possibility of bringing Gunn back, but it was ultimately decided not to do so. Now, it appears the only question is whether Gunn's script for the movie will survive, or if the movie will actually happen at all.
