Pet Sematary Has Screened, Here Are The Early Reactions

Sometimes dead is better, but not better than getting an early chance to see the new Pet Sematary movie. The 2019 Stephen King adaptation premiered Saturday night, March 16 at South by Southwest, giving lucky critics and fans a first look at the horror movie before it opens wide in the U.S. on April 5.

So far, it sounds like Pet Sematary is a big win. The film highly impressed many viewers, including CinemaBlend's own Sean O'Connell, although he admitted he missed a few little things from Stephen King's original story:

Collier's Perri Nemiroff absolutely raved about the movie, praising directors Kevin Klsch and Dennis Widmyer, along with young star Jet Laurence as Ellie Creed.

Erik Davis of Fandango praised the film, adding that it should please fans of Stephen King's novel. He also pushed Captain Marvel's Goose out of the way to make room for Pet Sematary's Church -- as if what we really need isn't a buddy movie starring both cats.

Take me to Church! Chris Evangelista of /Film also noted that Pet Sematary isn't 100% faithful to Stephen King's novel, but that didn't damage his opinion of the movie at all. He called it one of the best King adaptations to date.

Some fans at home -- myself included, I'll admit -- have worried the Pet Sematary trailers may have given away the entire story. Critics like Heather Wixson of Daily Dead tried to put those fears to rest, adding expectations of some major twists.

Since we're talking about a horror film, Meredith Borders of Fangoria emphasized that it delivers on one major requirement -- scares.

Stephen King published Pet Sematary in 1983, and a horror movie adaptation was first released in 1989. We already know from the trailers that this film makes one semi-big change to the source material, but apparently there are more changes ahead.

The 2019 adaptation stars Jason Clarke as Louis Creed, Amy Seimetz as Rachel Creed, John Lithgow as Jud Crandall, Jet Laurence as Ellie Creed, and both young Hugo Lavoie and Lucas Lavoie as Gage Creed.

Pet Sematary opens opposite DC's Shazam!, which will be some serious competition at the box office. Early estimates put Pet Sematary's opening anywhere from $20 million to $30 million at the domestic North American market. The movie could skew higher after all of these rave reviews -- including promises of secrets not revealed in the trailers -- driving more curious fans to the theater.

Top Gun: Maverick Is Casting Gooses Son, Heres Whos Being Looked At For The Role

It's been 32 years, but at long last we're heading back to the Danger Zone. The sequel to the 1986 classic Top Gun, titled Top Gun: Maverick, has begun filming with Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer signed on to reprise their roles as Maverick and Iceman. Joining the two rival pilots will be the son of their fallen comrade Nicholas "Goose" Bradshaw, the character played by Anthony Edwards, who died in the first film. The son of Goose is set to have a key role in the film and casting is underway for the part. The frontrunners are Nicholas Hoult, Glen Powell and Miles Teller.

As the son of Pete Mitchell's best friend and wingman, the part is set to be an important one in Top Gun: Maverick. As such, this has been a highly coveted role. Whoever is cast will be acting opposite Tom Cruise in a nostalgic sequel to a beloved film. Testing for the role has been going on for several weeks according to The Hollywood Reporter, with producers Tom Cruise, Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison whittling down the list of candidates to Nicholas Hoult, Glen Powell and Miles Teller. The Maze Runner's Dylan O'Brien and The Shannara Chronicles' Austin Butler were both reportedly previously in the running.

For those who don't remember, in the original film, Goose was killed during a training engagement when the F-14 he and Maverick were in went into a flat spin. They both ejected but Goose hit his head on the ejected canopy and died. When we first heard about Goose's son being in the sequel last year, it seemed that he might be named Wrigley and will immediately butt heads with his instructor Pete Mitchell at Top Gun class. This will potentially be an antagonistic relationship between teacher and student in the beginning, which makes sense considering Goose was killed while flying with Maverick.

Nicholas Hoult, perhaps best known as Beast in the X-Men franchise, will be appearing in X-Men: Dark Phoenix next year and will be playing legendary author J.R.R. Tolkien in Tolkien, so he'll be busy whether or not he lands this role. Miles Teller last appeared in Only the Brave and he will be seen later this year in Nicolas Winding Refn's TV series Too Old To Die Young. Glen Powell is enjoying some buzz at the moment thanks to his performance in the surprise Netflix hit original movie Set It Up. (He also played John Glenn in Hidden Figures.) These are all talented actors and the role sounds like it could be a meaty one, which bodes well for Top Gun: Maverick to hit that nostalgic sweet spot while still offering up something that drives the story forward.
